When is the last time you woke up somewhere other than your home? I made it a mission to travel to a new town or state every month this year. Vacations do not always have to be somewhere international. I do love a good international trip. However, I have been enjoying my short monthly weekend getaways. I am very thankful to have found a career that allows me to work from home three consecutive days a week. Because of this, I am able to travel and still get my work done! You do not have to wait to travel. Explore the world, no matter how far or short. You do not need to compare your short trips to someone’s grand international trip. “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Your small trips can be just as rewarding as the big getaways.
Start by visiting old friends, relatives, or acquaintances. You can pick a location that is a short driving distance from your home. Remember those college friends who said you always have a place to stay? Take them up on their offer! You would be surprised how many people are more than willing to host you during a weekend stay. I recently traveled to Los Angeles, California for a week. I met up with my best friend who lives on the West Coast. Her cousin allowed us to stay at her home. She was the most amazing host!! I had such a wonderful time in LA. Be sure to give your host a nice thank you gift at the end. I sure hope she enjoyed the candle we left for her!
With so many flight deals, you can snatch up a great deal on a flight. Remember that trip to LA I mentioned? I found a round trip flight on Alaska Airlines for $197. I live all the way on the East Coast! That was a steal! I also find flights home on JetBlue for under $100 round-trip. You may have to stalk the varying airlines but there are deals out there! Sign up for travel deal sites such as The Flight Deal. If you are not stuck to a specific date, you can really catch a great deal while finding a reasonable or even free place to stay.
Do not feel that you are obligated to go to every place that others have. You do not have to compare your travels to your neighbors. If you cannot afford an international trip just yet, continue to save. It will happen in due time. You may even save $100s of dollars by waiting for a deal. In the mean time, visit those places like New Orleans, Delaware, Milwaukee, and much more. I had an amazing time in Kansas City, Missouri a few weeks ago. Be open to an area and remember to call that friend who said you can always stay with them!
