#SLAY like Bey…Get in Formation!

Beyoncé dropped a new single on Saturday. I contemplated not going to sleep that night just in case she had intentions on dropping an album. I know we may have differences of opinion and reaction to the song. Personally, I loved the song. Just as I did on my YouTube channel, I wanted to take a moment to extract some of the positive themes and messages from the song. DISCLAIMER: The Red Lobster line was not the most inspiring, but I liked it. However, this is the only shine it will get from me in this article. I may have to go to Red Lobster today though. 🙂 So, let us SLLLLAAY:

  • “What happen at the New Orleans?”
The opening scene of the video was powerful. Beyoncé brought attention to the unfortunate circumstances still affecting those who were displaced as a result of Hurricane Katrina. There are many people who were not able to return to their homes. Over 10 years ago, on August 29, 2005, a Category 3 storm hit the area and brought sustained winds of 100-140 miles per hour, stretching some 400 miles across. The storm did so much damage. Hundreds of thousands of people in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama were displaced from their homes. The unfortunate aftermath is people are still suffering today. Beyoncé reminds us to never forget. Often news is only newsworthy until the next story comes along, let us not forget those who were affected by tragedies and unfortunate events. Be their voice when the world has moved on to the next story.

  • “Y’all haters corny with that illuminati mess”

Many wealthy celebrities are often associated with the “Illuminati.” It is a “secret society” that dates back to the 1700s. Conspiracy theorists often associate Beyoncé’s success with the Illuminati. Conspiracy theorists believe that the Illuminati is still at large, controlling the world on a global scale. Beyoncé wants the world to know that her success is a result of hard work, great work ethics, and dedication. For those people who question your success, remind them that you worked hard. You may not have had the same upbringing. You may have had access to more opportunities than them, however you continue to work hard. Be thankful for the opportunities that have presented themselves. You continue to prepare yourself for all opportunities that may be on the horizon. Never judge your path to success to another person’s path to success. You do you. You create opportunity when the world does not even want to give you a chance. #SLAY

  • “I like my baby hair, with baby hair and Afros”

That was a REEEEAAD. Beyoncé is criticized often because of Blue’s hair. She often wears it in its natural state. There will always be someone who questions your hair and clothing choices. If everyone wore the same clothing, we would not need as many designers in the world. Embrace your style. Embrace you. #SLAY
  • “I see it, I want it…I dream it, I work hard. I grind ’til I own it.”

This has to be my FAVORITE line in the song. “I see it, I want it. I dream it, I work hard. I grind until I own it.” No dream is too big. However, nothing in this world is given. You have to be ready for the opportunity when it presents itself. You work hard. Work efficiently. Work smart. Keep working until you achieve that goal. You can do it. Dream it…Make it happen. You do not have to announce your every move. Let people see the results. #SLAY
  • “Okay ladies, now let’s get in formation…Always stay gracious, best revenge is your paper”

Let us get in formation. Beyoncé is calling all women (and we will say men too) to get in formation. We can accomplish so much when we are united. You never know the poet you met at the diner may be the feature at your new restaurant. We need others to succeed. You need a team of supporters, encouragers, and people who do not mind getting dirty with you. Always be grateful. If you were not born into privilege and now have access to things that others in your circle or family do not, be grateful. Encourage them to find their own path to success. Your best revenge is your paper. This is not limited to money. Obtain that degree. Obtain those certifications. You may not be able to go to school immediately after high school. You may have to go to work first, but you save and one day you will be able to go to college or cosmetology school. Make choices that will benefit you in the future not just today. Obtain whatever is necessary to get to the next level in both your career and personal life. Your best revenge is your paper. There will be people of all races who may question your success or even wonder how you obtained the very things you worked hard to obtain. Show them that you are capable of accomplishing your goals. #SLAY
